The Xs & Os of Success: A Playbook for Leaders in Business and Life
by Lon Kruger and DJ Allen

Lon Kruger has found a unique formula for success that includes bringing the very best out of his players and teams. He has done it with a dignity and class that is not always associated with the sporting world. Imagine if you could use those same principles to help improve your business or personal life? In The Xs & Os of Success: A Playbook for Leaders in Business and Life, Kruger does just that. He lays out his principles for taking over cultures seeking stability and direction and changing them into positive, successful environments that bring out the very best in people. These are lessons that are easily applied in the field of business . . . and in life. Kruger does an outstanding job of weaving his own basketball coaching experiences into quick-moving examples of his performance and leadership principles. By the time you reach the last page, you come away with an excellent understanding of why Lon Kruger is not only such an outstanding coach and person but also a brilliant motivator of people.

BIG Ideas for SMALL Groups: Conversation Starters

decades_80s_cube

Looking for a way to get your Small Group talking?

I came across a cool idea that I believe every Small Group leader can use to get even the most introverted person to be involved!  The Conversation Starter is called TableTopics.  Here are a few ways that the TableTopics can be incorporated into your next meeting!

  • Plan a ’60s, ’70s or ’80s themed party with the TableTopics Decades conversation starters!  (Have members dress the decade, have a creative menu for the evening, have music playing from the decade, think of your own…)
  • Use TableTopics to lighten the atmosphere and it is a great way to make newcomers or “quiet” members feel included.
  • Make up your own TableTopics that would include questions from your study or the Bible.  This conversation starter will be a sure way to create interest and bring fun and creativity to your next Small Group discussion!

What could be more fun than having your entire Small Group involved in what is happening at your meeting!  This is an exciting way to get out of the “norm” and allow your Small Group to relax and have fun!

What are some ideas that you have used that have been successful in creating an environment that got the entire Small Group involved?

UnCertainty:What Is Your Greatest Fear?

fear-of-books-22527Central is currently in a weekend series entitled Un Certainty.  Uncertainty leads to fear. Fear leads us to make decisions and choices we wouldn’t normally make. In the midst of economic crisis, loss of jobs, banks in crisis, and the continued war, how are you handling all of this uncertainty?  Here is the question…”What is your greatest fear?”  Whenever I thought about the question, I decided to make up a new phobia or fear (it is probably already a listed phobia but I wanted it to sound like it was my idea).  My new phobia is connectophobia:  the fear of not being connected.  I don’t want to miss anything and I will continually check my email, twitter, facebook account, MySpace, online campus, and my voicemail.  Maybe that will lead to a disorder of OCD.

“That Crazy Little Thing Called Love”

Our Senior Pastor’s wife Lori Wilhite has a great blog called “Leading and Loving It.”  Lori is currently highlighting “Marriage” on her blog and is using Jud’s book “That Crazy Little Thing Called Love” as a launching point.   Here is one excerpt from her recent blog telling about how she and Jud met:

“Here is the fifty cent version of how our history together began. The first time Jud saw me, he was speaking and I was in the audience. I thought he was looking at me … then decided that I was crazy. But he was. He figured out who I was and called me with what might be one of the worst pick up lines in history: “I just, uh, wanted to see if I could take you to coffee and encourage you.” Maybe not the smoothest line, but it worked. And I was crazy about him from our first lunch. Five months later we were engaged. Four months after that we were married. That was 12 years ago. I love him more now than then. I’m the luckiest girl ever!”

Lori and Jud are wonderful people and I know we will enjoy learning from their marriage and from the marriages of those who post comments.  Check it out at http://leadingandlovingit.wordpress.com/
